Sermon Date:  Mar 07, 2010
Speaker Name:  Rev. Billy Chung
Scripture:  1 Corinthians 13:1-7
Passage:
                         Love is   ………..

Patient (long suffering): being by others over and over without retaliating

Kind: being yourself useful to others, to be beneficial to others

Does not envy: does not boil over, does not get angry about someone else’s blessings

  1. “I want what you have.”

2“I am unhappy because you have success, beauty, money, children, etc………….”

Examples of envy:

a. Your friend is happily married but you are:

miserable single   and worried that you will never get married.

b. Your friend is happily single but you are:

miserable and married.

c. Your friend lives very comfortably and takes trips several times a year to vacation spots like Hawaii, Italy, France, and Korea but you feel the only trips you take are the ones to the doctor, dentist, and Walgreen’s.

d. Your friend studies less than half as much as you do yet gets straight A’s

but you almost live at the library but get  all C’s and D’s.

e. Your friend eats whatever they want and never gains weight but you seem to gain weight just by looking at it.

            Results of envy

  1. Weakened physical health

A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.  - Proverbs 14:30

  1. Limited spiritual growth and influence

“Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly-- mere infants in Christ.  2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready.3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men? – 1 Corinthians 3:1-3

You allow yourself to be used by Satan to dishonor God, hurt yourself and others.

ie:  Eve’s jealousy led to dishonoring God, hurting herself and Adam

Cain’s jealousy led to murder, dishonoring God, hurting himself, his parents, etc

ie: Saul’s jealousy of David led to dishonoring God, hurting himself, being overcome by an evil spirit, a desire to murder David,  etc

9 And from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on David.  10 The next day an evil spirit from God came forcefully upon Saul. He was prophesying in his house, while David was playing the harp, as he usually did. Saul had a spear in his hand  11 and he hurled it, saying to himself, "I'll pin David to the wall." But David eluded him twice. 1 Samuel 18:9-11

4. Every evil you can imagine

But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

James 3:14-16

Cure for envy – Love pushes out envy from our hearts

And Jonathan had David reaffirm his oath out of love for him, because he loved him as he loved himself. - 1 Samuel 20:17

  1. Replace whining with worshiping.

Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you.

13 But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.  - 1 Peter 4:12,13

2. Ask God to change you. - Psalm 119:36,37

Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. 37 Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.

  1. Replace envying with community.

(Actively participate in a small group.)

Christians commonly say they want a relationship with Jesus, that they want to “get to know Jesus better.” You will never be able to do that by yourself. You must be deeply involved in the church, in Christian community, with strong love and accountability. Only if you are part of a community of believers will you be able to love Him and grow into his likeness.

  1. Replace comparing with Christ-following.

(Focus on obeying Jesus rather than comparing yourself with others.)

Jesus told Peter to follow Him and stop focusing on John.

20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is going to betray you?")  21 When Peter saw him, he asked, "Lord, what about him?"  22 Jesus answered, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.“ – John 21:19-22

5. Feed your heart with the gospel daily.

“The gospel is not just the ABCs (basics) of the Christian life, but the A to Z of the Christian life.”  - Rev. Tim Keller

“The truth of the Gospel is the principle article of all Christian doctrine. . . . Most necessary is it that we know this article well, teach it to others, and beat it into their heads continually.”
 Martin Luther

There is a HUGE difference between knowing God loves you and experiencing that God love you. It is a bigger difference than knowing ice cream tastes good and experiencing that ice cream tastes good.

How do you preach the gospel to yourself?

Keep reminding yourself how forgiven, accepted, and loved you are because you are in Christ.

Keep reminding yourself that because of Jesus’ suffering and death for you

with each passing every second, you are getting ……..

closer and closer to the day when God will completely satisfy all of your desires for …..

       -love

           -physical pleasure

           -awesome food

           -perfect health

           -fulfillment

           -healing

           -security

            -being re-united with loved ones

            -Himself

Conclusion:

As we feed our hearts with God’s love, presence and promises,

He will empty our hearts of envy and fill our hearts with joy.
