|Sermon Date:||Mar 28, 2010|
|Speaker Name:||Rev. Billy Chung|
|Scripture:||1 Corinthians 13:1-7|
|Passage:||If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.
4 ¶ Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant,
5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,
6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;
7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love is ………..
Patient (long suffering): refusing to get revenge against those who sin against you over and over
Kind: being useful and helpful to others
Does not envy: does not get angry or unhappy about someone else’s blessings
Does not boast: does not display oneself or does not exaggerate one’s importance
Not self seeking:
<!--[if !supportLists]-->• <!--[endif]-->The nature of love is to give, not to take.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->• <!--[endif]-->Love looks outward toward others, while sin looks inward to the satisfying of self, often at the expense of others.
- Struggling - -Jacob struggled all night with God – Genesis 32
- 2. Costly Surrender - Making a decision to follow God’s will
- 3. Certain reward
-Why did God want Jacob to struggle?
there are certain things that you can ONLY
learn as you struggle
-learn sacrificial giving only when finances are tight
-learn perseverance only when you are tired and feel like giving up
-learn how to truly rejoice when your circumstances are unpleasant (sick, feeling unloved
- learn how to love when you get nothing from it
Jacob before his struggle with God in Genesis 32:
Who was the stranger that Jacob wrestled with?
It was God.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->• <!--[endif]-->God held back His power so that He wouldn’t completely crush Jacob.
(Just a touch from God resulted in Jacob being permanently crippled.)
Jacob realized it was God; that’s why he said, “I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been preserved." – Gen 32:30
<!--[if !supportLists]-->• <!--[endif]--> Centuries later, Jesus entered the world as a helpless baby.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->• <!--[endif]--> He limited His own power to provide a perfect model for us to follow.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->• <!--[endif]--> He didn’t turn stones into bread when He was hungry.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->• <!--[endif]-->God won because He changed Jacob.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->• <!--[endif]-->Jacob won because he was changed.
-one on the right path with God
-one who has been saved by God
-one who gains the victory
<!--[if !supportLists]-->• <!--[endif]-->Before this story, every story about Jacob is about him doing something evil, something selfish
<!--[if !supportLists]-->• <!--[endif]-->
- Think about sacrifices you’ve made and the rewards God has provided.
Recently, there was a mistake and I was overpaid at my computer job. If I had not said anything, nobody would have found out or known except for me and God.
I chose to report the mistake. The result was that I lost money after the adjustment was made. However, God rewarded me for being honest.
I had some home repairs done and I expected the bill to be alot. However, the repairman charged me nothing, which is very unusual especially since he drove a long distance to do the repairs. He even didn't charge me for the parts he used to do the repairs.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->2. <!--[endif]-->Struggle with God in prayer.
-Prime Minister of England 4 times
<!--[if !supportLists]-->• <!--[endif]-->Writing the most important speech of his life at two o'clock in the morning
<!--[if !supportLists]-->• <!--[endif]-->the mother of a poor, dying, crippled boy came to him
<!--[if !supportLists]-->• <!--[endif]-->she begged the servant to ask to Gladstone to bring a message of hope and cheer to her hopeless boy who was dying.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->• <!--[endif]-->Without a hesitation, the great Gladstone left the preparation of this most vital speech and he spent the rest of the night with that little boy, leading him to a knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, staying until dawn, he closed the eyes of the dead child and went home, he says, with his heart flooded with the peace of God.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->• <!--[endif]-->"Later that morning he told a friend, 'I am the happiest man in the world today.'"
William Gladstone chose to be unselfish and God rewarded him with great joy.....joy that this world cannot offer.
