Sermon Date:  Apr 04, 2010
Speaker Name:  Rev. Billy Chung
Scripture:  John 12:23-36
Passage:  Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me. – John 12:23-26

                                                                                                Resurrection Sunday 2010

Originally a German pagan celebration dedicated to Eastre, the goddess of children and springtime

The symbol for Eastre was a rabbit.

Believers of Christ changed the pagan holiday into a Christian holiday to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus from the dead

Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. – John 12:12-26

In the dictionary, death comes before sacrifice, but in real life death comes before joy.

Jesus had to die.

            It was necessary.

There was no other way for you to be saved.

Someone had to be punished for your sins.

God is a God of justice and He couldn't just let it go.

What is life?

It is allowing Jesus live through you – Gal 2:20

Luke 6:20-26

Looking at his disciples, he said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.  21 Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.   22 Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.  23 "Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their fathers treated the prophets.  24 "But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort. 25 Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.  26 Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets

We hold things to tenaciously in our hand.  We're willing to serve the Lord if it doesn't cost us a little extra time, if it doesn't take a little too much energy, if we don't miss our favorite television program.  We want to offer ourselves as a living sacrifice to God but we want to hold a little over here so we can indulge in the world and enjoy its allurements and its entertainment.  What God wants is an unspotted, unblemished self sacrifice.

God wants a person who has died to his desires so that he can truly live.

“I was made to see that if ever I would suffer rightly, I must first pass a sentence of death upon everything that can be properly called a thing of this life, even to reckon myself, my wife, my children, my health, my enjoyment, and all, as dead to me, and myself as dead to them. God is superior not only to sinful pleasures, but also superior to sacred ones as well. Everything else in the world we must count as dead to us and we to it.” - JOHN BUNYAN

Power to live this way comes from knowing

               You have comfort in heaven.

               you have recognition in heaven

               you have treasure in heaven

Those who sow in tears shall reap with joyful shouting. - Psalm 126:5

How do you die?      By knowing you are already blessed.

One day as I was passing into the field . . . this sentence fell upon my soul. Thy righteousness is in heaven. ……I saw with the eyes of my soul Jesus Christ at God’s right hand; there, I say, was my righteousness; so that wherever I was, or whatever I was doing, God could not say of me, he wants [lacks] my righteousness, for that was just before him. I also saw, moreover, that it was not my good frame of heart that made my righteousness better, nor yet my bad frame that made my righteousness worse, for my righteousness was Jesus Christ himself.

Tony Dungy

-became the first African-American head coach to win the Super Bowl when his Colts defeated the Chicago Bears on February 4, 2007.

-Only the 3rd man to win the Superbowl as a player and head coach.

-set a new NFL record for consecutive playoff appearances by a head coach (10)

-retired from coaching in the NFL in Jan, 2009

Dungy stresses that coaches are essentially teachers[22] who put faith and family ahead of football and do not belittle their players or scream at them. Also, like Dungy, they remain calm when things go badly.

Dungy said he’d actually gotten "more satisfaction" from the success of Quiet Strength than the Super Bowl win. That’s because, he said, "I’ve gotten so many calls and letters from people saying they really got something out of it, something that helped them."[44]

“He walks to the beat of a different drummer,” Frazier said. “He’s not motivated by money, fame and adulation of fans and media. Those things don’t affect how he makes a decision, which is so different than the norm.

“He’s not concerned about other people’s opinion.”

Dungy walked away from a multi-million dollar salary and a playoff-contending team in January to seek something greater: Significance.

“I still love football, but I looked at football as a place God put me, for a season in my life. It was something I was good at, it was something I enjoyed and a profession that he gave me great favor with. But I always felt there were other places that God would use me. I believed there was something more.”
