Sermon Date:  Aug 17, 2008
Speaker Name:  Rev. Billy Chung
Scripture:  Psalm 73
Passage:  1Surely God is good to Israel,
to those who are pure in heart.

2 But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;
I had nearly lost my foothold.

3 For I envied the arrogant
when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

4 They have no struggles;
their bodies are healthy and strong. [a]

5 They are free from the burdens common to man;
they are not plagued by human ills.

6 Therefore pride is their necklace;
they clothe themselves with violence.

7 From their callous hearts comes iniquity [b] ;
the evil conceits of their minds know no limits.

8 They scoff, and speak with malice;
in their arrogance they threaten oppression.

9 Their mouths lay claim to heaven,
and their tongues take possession of the earth.

10 Therefore their people turn to them
and drink up waters in abundance. [c]

11 They say, "How can God know?
Does the Most High have knowledge?"

12 This is what the wicked are like—
always carefree, they increase in wealth.

13 Surely in vain have I kept my heart pure;
in vain have I washed my hands in innocence.

14 All day long I have been plagued;
I have been punished every morning.

15 If I had said, "I will speak thus,"
I would have betrayed your children.

16 When I tried to understand all this,
it was oppressive to me

17 till I entered the sanctuary of God;
then I understood their final destiny.

18 Surely you place them on slippery ground;
you cast them down to ruin.

19 How suddenly are they destroyed,
completely swept away by terrors!

20 As a dream when one awakes,
so when you arise, O Lord,
you will despise them as fantasies.

21 When my heart was grieved
and my spirit embittered,

22 I was senseless and ignorant;
I was a brute beast before you.

23 Yet I am always with you;
you hold me by my right hand.

24 You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will take me into glory.

25 Whom have I in heaven but you?
And earth has nothing I desire besides you.

26 My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever.

27 Those who are far from you will perish;
you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.

28 But as for me, it is good to be near God.
I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge;
I will tell of all your deeds.

        Starting from today, I am going to talk about the types of prayer. There are 5 types of prayer. An easy way to remember them is by remembering the acronym ACCTS. Thinking of the word cactus may help you.

Adoration  - Psalm 146:1

            In the Lord’s prayer, we see that adoration should be  an essential aspect of our prayer life. The Lord’s prayer begins in the following way: "This, then, is how you should pray: "`Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name (Mark 6:9)". What Jesus is saying that we should pray that the Father'  would be honored.”

            In the Bible, it is clear that God wants us to praise Him.

For example, in Psalm 146:1, David is telling himself to  praise God. “Praise the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul.”

Psalm 150:6 calls every person in the whole world to praise God. “Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD.”

            Why do you think God wants us to praise Him? Is it because He is insecure and wants to be reminded of His worth?

            One reason God calls us to praise Him is because as we worship, we are reminded of who God is. We are reminded of God’s love, mercy, and power. We are reminded that He is both willing and able to help us.

The Bible says that God is perfect and therefore does not call people to praise Him because of insecurity.

C. S. Lewis discovered the reason why God wants us to praise Him. “The world rings with praise...readers their favorite poet, walkers praising the countryside, players praising their favorite game- praise of weather, wines, dishes, actors, mentors, horses, colleges.... I think we delight to praise what we enjoy because the praise not merely expresses but completes the enjoyment.”

He is saying that we praise what we enjoy our delight is not incomplete until it is expressed. If we were not allowed to express what we admire, our joy would be incomplete.

For example, it is like watching the Cubs play in the World Series but not being allowed to cheer. If you weren’t permitted to cheer, you would not enjoy the game as much. You might even feel miserable. Cheering increases your enjoyment. In the same way, worshiping God increases your enjoyment of God. So the reason God wants us to praise Him is not because He is insecure, but so that we could experience greater joy.

            I encourage you to spend time every day reading the Bible and seeing how God is revealed in the Bible. As you read about God’s faithfulness, about his mercy, love and other qualities, think about how He has shown these qualities in your life and spend time worshiping Him. I like listening to cds with worship and praise music and singing along. It helps me focus on God rather than on myself.

 Psalm 73

Asaph's condition before worship

    a. envious of nonbelievers v3

            nonbelievers are described as healthy v4,

                                                            wealthy, v3,12

                                                            having an easy life v5

                                                            proud v6

                                                           violent v6

                                                            dirty mouth v8  (swearing, threatening,

                                                            think they are God v9

                                                            influential v10

    b. He regrets being a child of God v13, 21

                       - has feelings of bitterness

  1. keeping his feelings to himself  v15

      d. like an animal living for its comfort and pleasure v22

Which flight would you choose?

United flight 1

            big room with king size bed, kitchen, microwave

            computer hooked up to the internet

            direct TV with 1000 TV stations

            Large screen TV

            on demand movies

            world class chefs ready to cook you whatever you want to eat

            Climate control so that you can control the temperature

            Nintendo Wii

            International Phone service with unlimited minutes

            Quiet flight (comfortable, no turbulence)

United 7:13

            no room, small seat in economy class

            no large screen TV

            no internet

            crackers and water

            cramped

            crying babies surrounding you, talkative people next to you

            people next to you smelly and sleeping on top of you

            middle seat

            bumpy flight

            sometimes cold, sometimes hot

            uncomfortable seat

Everyone would choose United 100 if the planes were headed to the same place.

However, United 100 is taking you to prison for the rest of your life.

United 713 is taking you to Hawaii for a family vacation

Now which flight would you choose?

Even though you flight is uncomfortable and you miss out on some of the pleasures of people on the other flight, it is okay since you know your flight is taking you to heaven

Christ has paid the ticket for you to go to heaven.

The ride there sometimes is difficult but your destination is certain: Paradise

Asaph after worship

Psalm 73:17 is the key verse.

 He  realizes there is no reason to envy nonChristians

 realizes how foolish he had been v22

 realizes God's presence v23

 confident about the future v24

 realizes God is the most precious blessing in the whole world v25,28

 wants to tell others about God v28

Your focus is either on yourself, others, things, circumstances or God. If you don’t continue to look at God, it is only a matter of time before you fail.

This world focuses on what is negative, what is missing, and what is destructive rather than what is good, pure, and beautiful. That is why you need your mind washed by the Word and washed in God's presence.

When we spend time in the Word and in worship singing to God, we begin to see people and situations more like He does (from up high). An eagle can see something the size of dime moving in the grass 600 feet in the air.

“We must praise him or we begin to die inwardly. A magnificent change occurs to us whenever we begin to praise. First, praise causes us to awake to God, because it frees us from ourselves. We are very much addicted to our own ego. We serve and love ourselves too much. But in praise, our heavenly focus frees us from our bondage to self-love. Once we get free of the necessity to enshrine ourselves at the center of all things, Jesus gets a chance to move into the spotlight.”

Second, praise delivers us from a critical spirit. There is a sense in which we “fake it ‘till we make it.” In practicing a happier mood, we somehow become happier people.

Praise God until you feel like it.

The biggest positive impact on my life:

    Word, worship, People who love God, love me and pray for me

Application:

            Worship God every day.

A young girl named Buttercup lives on a farm. There is a farm boy who works on the farm that her family owns. His name is Farm Boy. Whenever she asks him to do something, he always answers the same way (as you wish) As they both get older, Buttercup begins to like Farm boy. One day as he is about to leave the room, she asks him to get a pitcher that she can easily reach. Farm boy walks over to her, stares into her eyes, hands the pitcher to her and whispers, “as you wish.” As Buttercup looks into his eyes, she realizes that every time he said, “as you wish”, he was really saying, “I love you.” Jesus said if we loved Him, we would obey.”

Remember your purpose in life is to please God and one of the primary ways we please God is by worshiping Him.

Psalm 146:1   Praise the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul.
